General Microbiology Laboratory Fall 2008

You are required to have the following for lab:

• A NEW laboratory manual.

• A lab coat, apron, or scrubs.

• The following lab supplies (by the start of the second lab session):

  • Glass slides and coverslips

  • One depression slide

  • Lens paper

  • Wax marking pencil

  • Pressure sensitive tape (and a pen that will write on it).

• Failure to have these items in lab will result in a 5 point deduction each time.

Lab Attendance:

• Lab sections for the course are nearly nearly FULL -- that means there may be NO SEATS will be available in other lab sections.

• That means ATTEND YOUR OWN LAB SECTION IF AT ALL POSSIBLE.

• Labs will be open as possible for you to make up material you missed.  It is up to you to arrange to make up lab work.

• Tardiness:

  • Lab is often preceded by a brief introduction.

  • Coming in late disrupts the process and YOU miss the information.

  • BE ON TIME FOR LAB (as well as lecture).

  • Three instances of late attendance to lab will count as an absence.

  • After two unexcused lab absences each absence will result in a 5 point deduction from your total laboratory grade.

Laboratory Grades:

• Your lab points are averaged in with your lecture points to determine your final grade in the course.

• Lab points are as follows:

  Description	Points
  Lab Notebook	50
  Group Project and Report (Hand Washing)	50
  Unknown Project (written report)	100
  Independent Project -- subject varies  (written report)	100
  Laboratory Quiz	50
  Total =	300

• COME TO LAB PREPARED!!!!

• Each week a briefing for next week's lab will be posted in "DrStocksBlog" at the end of each week.  DrStocksBlog can be found at:  http://Drstocksblog.edublogs.org 

• Be sure to read this briefing and print it out.  I strongly suggest that you insert it into your notebook at the start that week's exercise.

  • Some may refer you to other readings for lab.
