COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is an introduction to the use and design of data b= ase management systems (DBMS). The student will gain practical knowledge of DBMS software using a leading personal computer package. The student will be directed thr= ough the set up of tables, the use of forms and reports, switchboard systems, si= mple database control programming database administration, and introductory SQL commands. The student will also be introduced to database design concepts including entity relationship diagrams and normalization.=

PRE-REQUISITES: CITA 110 for non-computer majors

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

&m= iddot;      =    Introduce the studen= t to basic DBMS data structures (field, records, and tables).<= /p>
&m= iddot;      =    Introduce the studen= t to the use of a programming language to control a database.<= /p>

MEASUREMENT CRITERIA FOR OBJECTIVES: There will be three hourly examinations duri= ng the semester. The exams must = be taken in class when they are scheduled.&nb= sp; In addition there will be a series of homework assignments. For full credit these must be comp= leted and turned in ON TIME.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance will be t= aken and students are expected to attend every class, but regardless of attendan= ce you are required to know the material, assignments, and information provide= d in every class session. A late arrival to a class may be counted as ½ an absence. The only valid excuses will be those from the health center or ano= ther college staff member. All students with four or less class hour absences wi= ll receive one additional assignment credit as extra credit.=

ACADEMIC HONESTY: Examinations and ass= ignments must represent the individual work of the student. Copying, giving or recei= ving aid is a waste of your time and mine and will not be tolerated. Should such activity be detected the students involved will receive a grade of zero for= the exam or assignment plus the loss of credit for one additional exam or assignment.

STUDENT CONDUCT IN THE CLASSROOM: The instructor in the classroom and in conference will encourage free discussion, inquiry and expression. Student performance will be evaluated wholly on an academic basis, not on opinions = or political ideas unrelated to academic standards. However, in instances wher= e a student does not comply with the Code of Student Behavior or with an instructor's reasonable conduct expectations in the classroom, such non-compliance can affect the student's evaluation and be cause for permane= nt removal from class or dismissal from College.

CELL PHONES/TAPE RECORDERS/ELECTRONIC DEVICES IN THE CLASSROOM= : Students are required to turn off cell phon= es (blackberries, etc.) in class and may not use recording devices, unless the student has a documented disability which permits recording, or permission = of the course instructor. A student's refusal to turn off a cell phone (blackberry, etc.) will be cause for dismissal from class. In addition, use= of ANY electronic devices (for text messaging, listening to MP3 players, inapp= ropriate use of a laptop, etc.) which disrupt class will also be cause for dismissal from that class.

NEW YORK STATE EDUCATION LAW - ABSENCES FOR RELIGIOUS REASONS:= Section 224-A allows a student to be excused from any examination or study or work requirements because of religious holidays. Each student must notify the instructor in advance so that an equivalent opportunity to make up any examination, study or work requiremen= ts he or she may have missed because of such absence may be given.<= /span>

INCLEMENT WEATHER: SUNY Delhi is a residential campus and stays open unless the governor closes the College. Simply stated, class will rarely be canceled. I will change my office phone message if I am not coming in due to inclement weather.
