WHO CAN TAKE ENGLISH 120:
|
INTRODUCTION TO ENGLISH 120 - PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT
The English Department at SUNY-Delhi offers English 120, a Portfolio Development course, for new and
returning students who have work experience in the field of their chosen major. Students in English 120
have the opportunity to prepare a portfolio for presentation to the faculty of their chosen discipline,
making the case to receive college credit for accomplishments and skills learned in the workplace.
Whether or not the major discipline ultimately grants the petitioned credits, English 120 students will
learn valuable presentation skills and will be awarded 1 credit hour from the English department
for work involved in assembling the portolio.
This course is designed for students who have work experience related to their major field of study.
For example, someone who has worked for five years as a mason may wish to study for the Construction
Technology degree. This person would have already learned a great deal of relevant information and skills
from time spent on the job. For such a person to have to enroll in a beginning level masonry course would be
a frustrating experience and probably not an efficient use of time or other resources. He or she could use the
Portfolio Development course to construct a portfolio to present to the Architecture, Construction, Engineering
and Applied Technologies Division at SUNY-Delhi petitioning for college credit for the work experience gained in
five years on the job. Provided this person does an acceptable job assembling the portfolio, they will receive
1 credit hour in English (English 120). The student would then have the opportunity to actually present their
portfolio to the faculty of the Architecture, Construction, Engineering and Applied Technologies Division, petitioning
to receive credit for their masonry experience and any other applicable work; if credits are granted, the student will
have fufilled graduation requirements without taking, what for them would be, needless coursework. Whether they receive
this second type of credit will be deteremined at that time by the faculty for the program petitioned.
After completing the assignments of this course, the student will have assembled a document that accurately describes and
documents their work history. The student must turn in three copies of the completed portfolio. The student should
also retain a fourth copy for his or her own files.
The Portfolio Development class has three primary goals:
